Corticosteroids are a foundational treatment for Duchenne

Daily dosing with corticosteroids—a commonly used treatment in Duchenne—is an effective option when managed by a healthcare provider. Corticosteroids can help slow the progression of Duchenne by reducing inflammation and helping muscles function for longer.

However, corticosteroids can also cause side effects, which may impact how well they are tolerated over a long period of time.

  • Side effects may include behavior changes, growth delay, bone changes or fractures, puffiness in the face (known as “cushingoid appearance”), weight gain, increased body hair, and cloudy vision (cataracts)
  • These side effects may make it necessary to change or stop corticosteroid therapy
    • Among 46 patients with Duchenne who responded to a survey, about 7 out of 10 stopped taking corticosteroids because of side effects

Talk with your healthcare provider about any side effects experienced while taking corticosteroids.
